To celebrate the winnings of the organization despite fighting and facing the pandemic with their theme for this year “Resilience”, The Nucleus conducted their Alternative Class Program (ACP) held via Google Meet, Apr. 23.

The Nucleus is the official Science Club of APEC Schools Cluster E, and their ACP this year was divided into different sessions featuring different aspects of Science such as Health & Wellness, Knowledge & Content-based, and Media-driven activity.

Mr. Sherwin Escurel, a former Research Specialist at the Department of Health, now a lecturer at the University of the Philippines Baguio, shared his knowledge about parasites, debunking myths, beliefs, and fake news about them. He also discussed facts about the human body and how we should be aware of the things concerning our health.

Mr. Louis Carl Oabel, Vice President of The Nucleus, led the session about climate change wherein he discussed the effects of climate change and the corresponding possible solutions. He also facilitated the Agham Film Review wherein two films, entitled “Thermostat 6” and “Don’t Look Up” that depict climate change and how the citizens of the society handle the timely issue were shown.

“A lot of people are interacting with media so they always encounter news and they don’t know whether or not it is true or fake. With our program, we can help students in dissecting information with the help of the expert that we invited,” Oabel shared in an interview.

Other segments of The Nucleus’ ACP include Agham Hacks which focuses on unique and interesting science experiments that are available at home, Yoga 101 which promotes health and wellness awareness among APEC students, and Gamify: The Nucleus Jeopardy Edition which is a friendly competition open to all APEC students to help them recall and look back the exciting activities that were offered by the club as it transition to another school year.

Erika Charlese Muyula, the President of The Nucleus opened the program with an icebreaker activity wherein the audience was asked to play 4 Pics 1 Word and Fact or Cap.

The program ended with a closing remark rendered by Mr. Juan Carlo Gumagangan, Club Moderator of The Nucleus.

“My experience with The Nucleus ACP was fun and interesting since I’m really into science and myths. My learnings from the session with the experts are the need to be aware of your surroundings especially when it comes to your health so you can be healthy as well as your family,” shared Janelle Flores, one of the participants. “My experience with the ACP I joined was that it was fun and educational, especially for many of the students who are interested and even like Science. The Myth the experts was one of the sessions I joined and they were able to share their knowledge and even debunk many myths about it. The Nucleus ACP was a great session I joined in and I was also able to learn that we must be aware of what is factual and what’s not real on certain topics,” narrated by Julienne Feliz Antonio, another participant. #
