Amplify Cluster D organized a webinar entitled “Media in the New Normal” as part of the Alternative Class Program (ACP) held via Google Meet, Dec. 16.

ACP is an annual program by APEC Schools which is created for students to explore and learn lessons apart from what is being taught in class subjects. For this year, Amplify San Pablo collaborated with the Amplify of other branches under Cluster D which are Amplify Muntinlupa, Amplify Sta. Rita, and Amplify Lipa for a webinar that discussed the basics of news and feature writing, and the importance of the role of media at the time of the pandemic.

A cum laude graduate of BA Journalism at the University of the Philippines Diliman and a Media Analyst, the first speaker Mr. Khim Joshua Raymundo shared his knowledge in News Writing particularly the newsgathering process, news values or the things to consider when writing news, and the different types of news structure. Then, he demonstrated how to write headlines and lead of a news out of the data he prepared.

Mr. Jerry Bombane, Editor-in-Chief of Amplify San Pablo, was the next one to speak wherein he talked about Feature Writing. He discussed the process of writing a feature article and its structure, then gave an example of his own feature article for the participants to recognize each part of the structure.

For the last topic of the webinar, Mr. Jeremiah Nataba, a graduate of BA Broadcast Journalism from PUP Manila and a former intern at GMA News and Public Affairs explained the role of media in this time of the pandemic, particularly on how to spot and fight disinformation. He also tackled the status of media during Martial Law, People Power Revolution, and in the present, the constitutional guarantees and limitations of press freedom, and the risks of the media profession.

After the talk of each speaker, there was a Question and Answer portion part, and a Certificate of Recognition was awarded to them.

School Paper Advisers (SPAs) gave a message of gratitude to everyone attended before the end of the program. Mr. Zion Krehl Astronomo, SPA of Amplify San Pablo, exclaimed that it was “a successful collaboration.” The outline of the webinar was a product of the combined proposals of Amplify Muntinlupa and San Pablo, wherein the two speakers were invited by Ms. Rachel Lea Detera, SPA of Amplify Muntinlupa.

The webinar was hosted by Ms. Jenilyn Manipol and Mr. Randel Bautista, the SPA and Editor-in-Chief, respectively, of Amplify Lipa. Opening Remarks was delivered by Ms. Pearl Joy Canatoy, SPA of Amplify Sta. Rita, and her team were in charge of the registration and documentation.
