MCH Essay for the month of August

By Lara Jane Macalindong from Grade 11-STEM

Ad astra per aspera is a Latin saying that means "to the stars through hard work." This tells us that hard work is the one key factor in the fulfillment of our dreams. It is true enough that in order to realize our goal in life, we need to work for it. But does hard work alone guarantee success? Can hard work alone suffice to bring one to the pinnacle of his dreams?

This question reminds me of a story about the famous American inventor Thomas Alva Edison. As many of you have perhaps known, Thomas Alva Edison invented the incandescent lightbulb. Before he finally succeeded in his invention, he spent not only hours but days, months, and years, trying to perfect his work. He worked very hard for it. However, there is another element that propped him out to success, and that is Focus. Focus kept him on track and directed him to his final goal.

I believe that focus is the "can't do without it" partner to hard work for everybody who is truly serious about pursuing his life's goal. While hard work adds experience, skill, and knowledge to a person about his chosen craft, focus, on the other hand, keeps him on track.

Focus does not mean denying yourself the pleasure of watching your favorite program with your family or loved one nor doing a lonely, solitary work along the path of life. Focus is indeed keeping on the right track even if there are distractions. You are continuously working and moving towards your chosen goal.

Focus, along with hard work, is certainly important, but you should not forget prayers! It is the Lord's blessing that will truly guide you to success.
